Knitwear that dresses like a shirt

A knit polo or a knit henley does the job of a sweater with the shape of a shirt: a collar or a buttoned placket at the neck, full sleeves, and a ribbed hem that sits neatly at the hip. Worn on its own it looks finished; under a coat it adds warmth without bulk.

Polo or henley

The knit polo has a collar, so it sits closer to a shirt: right for the office, a dinner, or with tailored trousers. The henley has no collar, just a buttoned placket at a round or band neck, so it reads more relaxed: weekends, travel, with chinos or denim.

The knits

Cable knit has raised, twisted ropes and the most warmth. Waffle and birdseye are small, even textures that hold their shape. Rib and channel knits run in vertical lines that lengthen the body. Fine-gauge is the smoothest, close to a shirt in weight.

Choosing your size

Sold in S to XXL. Choose your usual size by the shoulders: the seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, with the ribbed hem resting at the hip.

Common questions

What is the difference between a knit polo and a knit henley?

A knit polo has a collar and a short buttoned placket, so it dresses up like a shirt. A henley has no collar, only a buttoned placket at a round or band neck, so it is more relaxed.

Can I wear a knit polo to the office?

Yes. A fine-gauge or ribbed knit polo with tailored trousers is smart enough for most offices, and warmer than a shirt in winter.

How should knitwear fit?

Close but not tight: the shoulder seam at the edge of your shoulder, room to move through the chest, and the ribbed hem resting at the hip.

How do I wash knitwear?

Hand wash cold or use a gentle cycle, inside out. Do not wring. Dry flat in the shade, reshaping while damp. Never hang a wet knit, it stretches.
