How to choose a check shirt

Most check shirts fail on one thing, and it is not the colour: it is the scale of the check against the size of the person wearing it. A large plaid on a slim frame wears the man rather than the other way round, and a micro check on a broad one disappears into a texture from two metres away. The rule that survives contact with a mirror is that the check should be readable from across a room but not countable.

Which check for which occasion

  • Windowpane is the quietest. A single thin line on a plain ground, widely spaced. It is the check that works under a jacket.
  • Gingham and small plaid read as a solid colour from a distance, which makes them the easiest to wear with anything.
  • Tartan and heavy plaid decide the outfit. Keep the trouser plain and let the shirt do the talking.

Fabric matters more than the pattern

The same check in flannel and in poplin are two different shirts. Flannel has a raised nap that softens the pattern and holds warmth, so it belongs to the cooler months. A cotton or linen blend keeps the check crisp and stays wearable through an Indian summer, which for most of the year here is the more useful answer.

Common questions

What is the best check shirt for men?

The one whose check scale suits your frame. A medium plaid in a cotton or linen blend suits the widest range of builds and occasions: readable across a room, quiet enough to wear to work, and cool enough for an Indian summer. Save heavy tartan for when you want the shirt to be the outfit.

Can you wear a check shirt to the office?

Yes, if the check is small and the ground is muted. Windowpane and fine gingham read as texture rather than pattern under office light, and both take a plain trouser without argument. Large or high-contrast checks read as weekend wear.

What should you wear with a check shirt?

Keep everything else plain. A check shirt is already the pattern in the outfit, so it wants a solid trouser in a colour picked out of the check itself, and shoes in leather rather than another texture.

Are check shirts still in style?

Check has not left menswear in a century and is not about to. What changes is the scale and the palette, not whether the pattern is worn.
