Why linen, and when it is the wrong answer

Linen is the only common trouser cloth that actively moves air, which is why it is the one that works in an Indian April and cotton is not. The trade is that it creases, immediately and permanently, and no finish prevents it. If a pair of linen trousers does not crease within an hour of being worn, it is a blend being sold as linen.

What to look for

  • Opacity. The single thing that separates a pair you can wear from a pair you cannot. Hold them to daylight before the first wear.
  • The waistband. Linen has no stretch and gives over a day, so a drawstring or a wrap-and-buckle holds where a plain hook does not.
  • The break. Linen falls softer than cotton, so a full break puddles. Finish just on the shoe or a touch above.

Caring for them

Cold wash, line dry in shade, iron damp on the reverse if you iron at all. Linen softens with every wash for the first year, which is the reason a good pair is worth more at the end of that year than at the start.

Common questions

Are linen pants good for Indian summer?

They are the best common option. Linen moves air through the weave rather than trapping it, so it stays cooler than cotton at the same weight. The compromise is creasing, which is a property of the fibre and not a fault in the trouser.

How do you stop linen pants from creasing?

You do not, and a pair that never creases is not linen. You can reduce it by choosing a heavier weight, hanging rather than folding them, and steaming instead of pressing. Creasing in linen reads as the cloth doing its job, not as carelessness.

What do you wear with linen trousers?

Anything unstructured. A linen or cotton shirt, a plain tee, loafers or leather sandals. Avoid pairing them with a stiff formal shoe, which fights the softness of the drape.
